Seeking but not finding the house builder, I traveled through the round of countless births. Oh, painful is birth ever and again! House builder, you have now been seen. You shall not build the house again. Your rafters have been broken down; your ridge-pole is demolished too. My mind has now attained the unformed nirvana and reached the end of every kind of craving. (Dh. 153-54.)

(The Centre of Mindfulness, Hong Kong) Asalha Puja / Vassavasa

July 9 is held throughout the reign of Theravada countries, Dhammasekya Day or Vaso. Full Moon Festival marks the beginning of Buddhist Lent and the anniversary of Buddha’s first sermon on the Four Noble Truths (setting the Dhamma Wheel in motion). During this festival, pilgrims offer wild flowers and candles at temples and present new bathing robes to monks to be used during the wet season, as monks still have to make rounds for daily food even in rainy weather.

Vassa refers to the Buddhist Lent, a three-month rainy period that usually falls from July to September. During this time, Buddhist monks do not leave the monastery. The origin of this long-standing custom dates back to the period of Gautama Buddha, when monks did not travel during the rainy season to avoid unintentionally bringing harm to crops, insects and even themselves in the wet weather. Instead, monks dedicated this time to focusing on deep meditation and studying the Dhamma.

Vassa is also a time for the leity to support the Sangha’s practice by offering robes and requisites. We welcome all to support and rejoice in the Sangha’s practice during Vassa.

Opening hours of the Centre of Mindfulness during Vassa are as follows:
Morning: 10am – Noon

Afternoon: 3pm – 5pm

Visitors and those who wish to offer meal dana are advised to contact Amiee To 9353 3948 or Michael Lun 9380 4272 in advance.
